![]() Now, you should understand that Halperin is a very logical businessman. It was while doing research for his book that Halperin became convinced that cryonics is possible, so he signed up for it himself. In addition to owning Heritage Rare Coin Galleries, the world’s largest rare coin company, Halperin is the author of several books, including The First Immortal, a critically-acclaimed novel on the subject of cryonics. My feature focused on Jim Halperin of Dallas. I was reporting on cryonics hoping to answer the question “Why would anyone want to get frozen at the moment of death, when you have no way of knowing whether science will ever be able to bring you back?” Honestly, as soon as I hear one, I say to myself, “No more calls, we have a winner!” We may interview you for an hour on tape, but all we’re really interested in are those seven-second gems. In fact, bells go off in my ears whenever someone delivers one. I just know after twenty years of putting together television pieces, that the best quotes are those pithy little sentences that seem to sum everything up. There’s no magic to my seven-second rule. You don’t have to run out and buy a stopwatch. In this chapter, I’ll help you master the art of the seven-second sound bite. You, too, can become what’s known in our profession as a sound bite machine. Most of the time, a good quote is a happy accident. Probably just as importantly however, helped me to develop relationships in the process, by understanding the information/message/SOUNDBYTE that is truly appropriate, but also the medium in which it is delivered.Estimated Reading Time: 5 minutes TALKING THE TALKĮvery once in a while, reporters run into someone who has a silver tongue, a person whose every sentence is a ready-to-print quote. These skills.these opportunities have helped me understand how to help an organization grow and to develop the business. The process we use to deliver information.often times (especially in HR) is just as important as the message itself. Think about it: How many times have we misconstrued a text message? The tone of an email? Sometimes, as innocent as we make them out to be, the soundbyte can still be misconstrued BECAUSE the soundbyte is the correct one, but the medium in which it is delivered is not the correct medium for such a message. What I learned is: There is a significant importance in a soundbyte.but there is truly an equal importance of how that message is delivered, particularly in what medium. Soundbytes are only words, but sometimes it takes more than takes holistic effort to best understand or mitigate a situation. However, perhaps what I have learned most importantly is taking the step BEYOND the soundbyte. I have experienced a lot of these coaching moments in my four-years on the job. Moreover, the use of language was more focused on the problem in the latter statement, rather than being focused on the person in the former. The latter statement surely came off differently than the former. ![]() I thought about the statement and realized, he was correct. The soundbyte he offered me was "You mean to say this persons reasoning comes across as difficult to understand". ![]() He qualified it by saying that what he was referring to, was that language and words were a powerful thing.they could mean a multitude of things, and sometimes even be misconstrued or mislead. My boss asked me "what do you mean by irrational"? So when I tried to explain my thinking (by ranting for about 3-4 minutes about the issue), my boss stopped me and said "based on what you are saying, I do not think that is the right soundbyte". My first week of this opportunity over 4 years ago, I walked into my boss' office and said something to the affect of "why is this person being so irrational" (referring to a vendor). What I have learned however, is that Soundbytes are not the end of the line.there is more. ![]() Perhaps the greatest experience of my career here is understanding the importance of the soundbyte.the information we portray in communication and how it may reflect on a person, a person's feelings, decision making etc. Thinking about the statement I just wrote: the statements I have made over the last several years they have all led me down a path of professional and personal leadership and growth. As my experience with draws to a close, I welcome the opportunity to reflect on my experience learning and developing at such a fine organization.
